Wire Wrapping Rocks and Fossils for the Geologist/Paleontologist

I will preface this by saying I’m far from a master wire wrapper. I’m terrible at it, actually. But it was a craft that I hadn’t tried and wanted to give it a go. I watched a couple YouTube tutorials and went digging through my fossil collection for interesting pieces. The pieces I wrapped I found myself while fossil hunting in various spots. The big wire wrapped brachiopod fossil in this picture was found by me in St. Leon, Indiana (where my wife proposed to me!). That was wrapped in thick gauge electrical wire to hold up a cool succulent. I tried to think outside the box with that one.

Above is a wire wrapped piece of petrified wood with a quartz vein running through it — I found it in the Big Horn Basin of Wyoming on a fossil dig I did in college. It had been sitting around in a box for years, and now I wear it as a statement piece necklace! There are plenty of tutorials on the interwebs about wire wrapping. It’s definitely a craft I’d love to work on some more. There are people out there who truly make beautiful works of art with their wrapping!

FUN FACT: For those who don’t know, I have a Bachelor’s degree in geology and a Master’s in paleontology! What are your favorite rocks/fossils?
